The story of St. George is an ancient tale found in many parts of the world and retold in many variations. It has a strong archetypal meaning ingrained in its symbolism that has stood the test of time.
A brave knight takes on the heroic task of saving the princess from the fiery dragon hiding in a cave, by taming it.
I see this as a guide to living a meaningful life. To be a hero, the knight must take on a task that has the risk of losing everything, even facing death. In the same way, when we have an aim that requires stepping out of our comfort zone into unknown territory, we no longer have control and we are faced with obstacles. This path is chaos for the survival instinct, that wants to stay in familiar habits. The dragon is often used to symbolise chaos. Stay in the cave and the dragon devours you like endlessly repeating thoughts taking over your mind in a degenerating downward spiral.
The knight does not stray from his task and tames the beast. A clear purpose and the responsibility of staying on course is like dagger pointing the way. The self deprecating thoughts and behaviours can me mastered. The heavy burdens breathing down ones neck like a steaming dragons breath, is left behind.
Emerging from the darkness is the virgin. It is our new state of being. A new beginning. The virgin is a woman, because the feminine is the creative force that births new life into the world. With our authentic selves we can bring forth new creations out of endless possibilities.
